Three Reasons to Learn a Musical Instrument

Going to work, taking care of family obligations, and maintaining a social life can mean that day-to-day life may become very busy for many individuals. It may sometimes feel like there simply isn’t enough time to learn new hobbies or participate in activities outside of work and family commitments. Regardless of how hectic life can get, it’s important to set aside some time to be creative and have a bit of fun! One way to be creative, have fun, and learn at the same time is to pick up a musical instrument. There are many benefits to learning a new instrument, and here are three reasons why it may be a great idea to start playing one.

1. Reduce Stress

Taking time to study an instrument may help to reduce stress. Stress is known to be very unhealthy for the body, and reducing it may help maximize an individual’s overall well-being. Playing music can be relaxing, and it may be beneficial to set aside approximately 15-30 minutes per day to focus on becoming familiar with an instrument. The time used to practice the guitar or piano, for example, can also be thought of as time being spent as an investment towards achieving and maintaining good health.

2. Make New Friends

The field of arts, music, and entertainment is filled with incredible and interesting men and women all over the world. One visit to a music store to purchase an instrument – such as the piano store Boston, for instance – could also be an opportunity to meet new friends.

3. Discover New Interests and Talents

Picking up a new instrument may provide the opportunity to discover new interests and talents. There are lots of instruments to choose from, and there are many avenues to explore in the field of music. Playing music may even spark a new career in the music industry. The joy derived from making music creates endless possibilities!

Does Brain Training Really Work?

ColorKu

molecube front
You might have heard of something called "brain training" in this modern era of Internet terminology. For online purposes, it's usually found in multiplayer brain games that supposedly "train" the person's brain to be brighter, sharper, or smarter than it was before it engaged in the game. Does it work though? Surprisingly, there's a large body of information to suggest that brain training does indeed do SOMETHING positive to the brain's neurological pathways.

It's a concept that's similar to how we lift weights to train our muscles to handle a certain amount of pressure and strain. If we lift weights, our muscles grow and become more productive. Brain training is supposed to work the same way. By "working out" the brain with puzzles and other multiplayer games designed for brain power, your brain is supposed to become more active and therefore more available for use.

While the verdict isn't entirely out and we don't know exactly if brain training works on a long-term basis, it seems that at least in short-term studies, people experience a burst of activity when playing these games that indeed do make their brains more engaged in their surroundings and therefore more available to do work that requires brain power. Many companies and educational institutions encourage brain training in the same way that they encourage their employees and students to eat and exercise to become healthier.

Neuroscience teaches us that a human brain reaches peak performance between the ages of 16 and 25. After the latter age, the brain tends to stop performing at peak performance and begins to decline. In order to combat this, scientists have wondered if stimulating the brain into active mode. And so far, the results have been impressive. People who engage their brains actively in reading and brain games do tend to be more stimulated mentally than others who simply let the decline go ahead full speed ahead without trying to intervene.

Only time will tell exactly how these brain games affect people over the long run, but as long as people report good results with them, it's likely that universities and employers will continue to encourage their members to continue using brain games as a way to stimulate mental activity as they age. Age is only one factor, though. The moral of the story seems to be: Don't let your brain gets lazy!

End of the Kids’ Vacation

Summer has passed and now rainy season is taking over the hot and humid temperature of the year. With the coming of the rain the kids’ school break has come to an end as well. My own son and daughters have mixed emotions about the end of their vacation and the coming school year. They’re sad that rest days are over and they will wake up very early again but excited as well because they’ll get to see their school friends again after more than two months.

The kids only have memories now of their happy school break when they’re so excited about the beginner guitar available at Musicians Friend at the start of their vacation. They want it so badly that they thought of taking a summer job to save for a new guitar. Kids are so fond of musical instruments that they want to work to be able to buy the instrument they love so much.

More Offline Hobbies and Activities for Josh

With the coming summer vacation in six weeks time I'm now thinking of what my son will do to use some of his excess time for playing online. He's so keen on playing his favorite games online that I sometimes think he should learn to play offline games more of his time. I want him to have a well-balanced childhood and I think of cutting his online focus more on his more relevant hobbies.

With this in mind I want him to spend his time on his music hobbies like playing keyboards and guitar. We're having an inventory of useful musical instruments for him and we're also thinking of buying a ukulele tuner just in case he wants to have his hands on that instrument. I'll have to think more activities for him online.

Good Additions to Your Stamp Collection

Some people get so much satisfaction when they collect something that they want and of great value to them. Each of us has preferences for things that we love and some find it so fulfilling to collect memorabilia of those things they love to have. I also have penchant for some of my favorite things like stationeries, old coins and stamps. Yes I love to collect these things which I like looking in varieties of designs and colors. I love writing friends and relatives thus I was able to collect stamps not just locally but international as well mostly coming from my god mothers from US and Spain. My stamps and stationeries go together as I used the latter in writing letters to my loved ones who lives miles away from me.

Well as I grew through the years I became busy and found no time to continue with my collection hobby and stopped collecting some of them. Now I only have some international mail stamps and the old coins which I continued collecting up to now. Collecting things like these seem to give you a certain satisfaction that’s hard to explain unless you experience it also. Now that I miss collecting stamps I would love to continue it again but find it hard now as most communications are online and I seldom receive letters through snail mail.

Great that now there’s a way for me and for other hobbyists to continue with their stamp collection with the help of other collectors who have stocks that they can sell to others. Find a large selection of US commemorative stamps at BruceMacDonaldStamps.com and get to see inexpensive stamps and rarities, modern and classics, postal history and a lot more. With the collection that they have you’re sure to find one or two that will satisfy your collection needs. Items have a return warranty within 14 days for any reason you may have.

5 Gift Ideas for Your Crafty Kids

Kids of all ages love to make things. Whether they are using remnants or building blocks, children take absolute delight in creating something. They get so much satisfaction and excitement from their finished project. Imagination and expression is a very important aspect of a child’s development. By expressing themselves creatively, they will attain a sense of achievement. Gifts made by children are something that will be greatly appreciated and treasured.

Calendar

Use a rigid piece of cardboard and attach a 12 month calendar to the lower half. Then get your child to draw a picture around the calendar. Attach a loop for hanging the calendar. This is a great Christmas present.

Bath salts

Recycle a nice glass jar. Decorate the lid with stickers or paint. To make bath salts, add food colouring and essential oil or perfume to Epsom salts. Mix well to distribute colour and spread mixture out on a sheet of baking or wax paper to dry for a couple of hours. Make enough to fill the jar. Tie a ribbon around the jar and you have a great gift of bath salts.

Bookmarks

Take a length of ribbon a bit longer than a book page. Knot at each end of the ribbon, beads, buttons or charms. This is a great way to mark a page of a book.

Hand prints

Paint the palm side of your child’s hand in a bright non-toxic colour and then press the hand firmly onto a paper plate. Let the paint dry completely. Attach a loop to the top of the plate for hanging and the outer edge or bottom of the plate can also be decorated with ribbon. With permanent marker, you may like to write the date and child’s name on the plate.

Love Box

This is a great present for grandparents, parents or aunts and uncles. Choose a tin, jar or box with a lid. Decorate the outside and glue a small picture of your child on the lid. Use the computer or handwrite sayings relevant to the person receiving the gift. They can be things like ‘I love it when you visit’ or ‘I love you reading stories to me’. Cut into strips and fold roughly and place in a decorated container. Small hand drawn pictures or small photos can also be added. Make sure to include one strip of paper with the date that this gift was made. These boxes will create many happy memories.

Making crafts is a hobby started young that will take you into adulthood. As your age progresses, so will your skills. Starting crafty activities at a young age will teach children how to use glue, scissors and will encourage their creative mind. Crafty kids would also enjoy having their own self inking stamps. Custom rubber stamps can be ordered online from websites such as Vistaprint, and you can have them personalized with your child’s name or for younger children, stamps of their favourite things, such as flowers or shapes, will make it easier for them to do crafty activities.

Learning Photography

My daughter loves taking photos just like me, she looks and moves like me and now she does the things I love most. Some says she’s a mini me and I just laughed at the comments because it’s true. She’s asking me to have my camera repaired so she can use it again to take pictures. She also wants to buy stock of batteries for the camera so she will not run out of battery life whenever she’s shooting. I’m actually searching for affordable ones like duracell procell 9V so as not to affect my budget. Photography is kind of expensive when you really make it a hobby and I better learn how to search for competitive prices of my daughter’s photo needs. I really feel that in years to come she’ll be more photoholic than me.

Indulge in Recreational Games

People are now into healthy lifestyle and healthy habits in life. This may be due to increasing number of sickness derived from bad vices, wrong eating habits and ways in life that can harm our body and lead us to deadly diseases that’s quite rampant these days. I heard some of my friends and teachers in my secondary suffered from severe cases of sickness due to not-so healthy lifestyle. We should really be disciplined in what we eat and what we do in life. It’s still best to have a balanced diet food, regular exercise and enough sleep. We should also have time for some relaxing moments with our loved ones as healthy body and happy soul are great partners. Happiness is vital to our state of mind and body thus we should seek things not only for our financial gain but for our happy life as well.

Recreation is one of the things that we should focus our mind sometimes because we can be happy doing some outdoor activities with our friends and family. It would include games and sports we particularly like to do like ball games such as badminton, bowling, tennis, volleyball; or some sports like marathon, walkathon, swimming or maybe we could try the shooting sport with the use of guns airsoft. Some men prefer this sport as it seems challenging to them. I myself haven’t tried this sport although I’m keen on shooting games when I was a kid. I always play what my brother plays even if I’m not a boy. It was fun and exciting game for me back then and when I learned of this kind of sport these days I know how nice it should feel when you try this one.

For those who don’t know this shooting sport I can share what I learned from reading. This sport uses Airsoft Gun which shoots with the use of plastic round pellets. It’s harmless, can’t kill someone and will not cause any injury to anyone. This is only a toy gun but if you can see it it’s like a real gun as makers of this toy manufactured it like it’s real with same look, feel and weight. Anyway the pellets can cause slight pain when they hit you so the player should also protect himself by wearing safety gear around the eyes and face. You can use thick pants and sweatshirts or wear camouflage for better protection. The rules depends on the game, airsoft gun can be used for target shooting or like a paintball where players should avoid being hit or you’ll be eliminated.

Interested on Other Things

My daughter is really interested in collecting old coins just like me and she’s searching in Wikipedia about how coins are being made and why we need to have coins from the government. Gen always has a way of being interested on things. In fact she’s very competitive and unlike other girls who were starting to know about how they can beautify themselves she resist from it. She’s more interested in inter-school contests than having some girly things talk.

Anyway among her collections she love most the two gold coins that Mom has found for her. I forgot to look at the date but it seems uncommon with the rest of her silver coins. Oh well that makes that two coins special to Gen. I told her to keep it for investment, who knows when she grows old it may reach great value. Funny kid she looks like me and she acts like me when I was still a kid. Even my friends told me so.

Gen's Inter-School Chess Competition

This is my daughter Gen's favorite sports and which she joined an inter-school competition in CES.  They were four who competed for the school and it took them 3 days.  I warned her that it may affect her standing in the class but how could I say no to her :-) she knows how to make me agree to what she wants.  Anyway she's good at it though she's not the champion type as of now, maybe in the next coming years.  She had 3 wins and two loses and that's good enough for me.  Her other teammates were not that lucky except for one who won 4 times.

Btw my little boy learned chess at 6 years old with his Ate Gen's supervision.  It's one of the games that we're fond of playing at home.

Glazes for Pottery

Now that summer vacation is just a few days away I’m searching for some hobbies and crafts that my kids will do to while away their free time. They’re fond of arts and crafts and I’m thinking of pottery for my two daughters as they’re old enough to do it. Well for those interested in pottery like us you can check out AMACO/Brent for all your pottery supplies and materials. They’re the leading company when it comes to pottery crafts.

Amaco has the complete glazes for all types of pottery for students and professional. They have a dozen glaze series and it includes cone 06 glazes for low fire glazes and cone 10 glazes for high fire glazes. You will surely love its different interesting effects when fired of course depending on what you want. They also have specialty glazes and texturizers for the complete professional effect of your pottery. Its variations make it really an exciting hobby.

I gather that dipping pottery into glazes is one of the most common method as it came from the oldest known method in pottery. It’s still is very useful to do as dipping glazes produces a wide variety of good finishes. Oh I really love to do it on summer with my bigger kids as it’s a useful hobby too.

A Delightful Hobby on Summer Vacation

Summer vacation is fast approaching and with the kind of weather that we have right now I think summer has begun already. It’s only a month before our kids will be staying at the house to enjoy their school break vacation to rest themselves for a new school year ahead. Well it’s not as if they will really sleep and sit only or spend the whole vacation playing games online. For me it’s not healthy for the mind and body. They should learn something that they don’t do in school. You can enroll them in music, enhancement studies or engage them in sports.

My kids are so fond of clays and I’m thinking of joining them when they do it because it’s fun even to adults. Well if you’re kids are apt to this kind of hobby you can check out AMACO/Brent for a complete line of products that will supply all your pottery requirements. They’re the leading company where you can get your pottery supply for the whole family. It’s nice to have bonding with your kids while you enjoy some creative ideas to be put into reality.

Aside from sports it’s really good for our kids to explore their artistic and creative minds and playing clays and doing pottery can give them the benefit that you want. It’s an enhancer for the mind as well. See them enjoy their different colors of clays put into slump molds of their choice. I know it’s fun and exciting because I did it when I was young and still joining my kids when they play their doughs.

No problem now with getting supplies as AMACO/Brent have it all from pottery wheels, clays, hardening stuff, kilns, majolica glazes and more. The fun will never stop as long as you have creative imagination and ideas. It will make their summer vacation a delightful break from school.

Watch NFL Games

I love sports and during my school days I’m very interested in marathon, volleyball, table tennis and football. I enrolled in softball as my physical education subject in college and it was really fun though a little hard for some girls who find it hard to run fast. As I’m into walkathon and marathon it was so easy for me to have a homerun. I really enjoyed all the sports that I’ve enrolled in college like volleyball and table tennis. It feels different when you’re in sports. It’s also good for the body and I never gain pounds unlike now that it’s a lot of effort and time just to spend one day a month to do badminton. When I was in my first years or working I indulge in bowling and was so glad to receive some daily awards like striker of the day in our office competition. Oh I really miss those days when I can have plenty of time to spend on my hobbies and sports.

Well people like who couldn’t afford the time to spend it on sports can just watch sport games on television. I’ve seen online that you can watch National Football League regular season games when you subscribe to nfl sunday ticket which is exclusive on DIRECTTV. Actually if you subscribe to the GameMix you can watch 8 NFL games at the same time, great isn’t it? I know sports’ enthusiast will surely love this opportunity and will now get the nfl sunday ticket schedule so they will not miss the chance of viewing this in HD.

If you really want to avail of this good offer you can visit their site and make a selection of what you want in their listings or you can just type in your zip and they’ll look for you to give you the service you want. Be assured that MyTVOptions’ nfl sunday ticket price is just the right one for your budget. It’s affordable and it can bring you to a lot of entertainment.
