How To Become a Better Equestrian

The bond between a horse and a rider is unique. You trust your horse to keep you safe while riding and your pet trusts you to communicate gently. Whether you are a new rider of you have been participating in the sport for years, you can always improve your skills. Here are three habits you can incorporate to become a better rider.

Work On Your Balance

You have to have good balance to ride a horse properly. You may want to practice balancing by riding bareback. You can also ride over cavaletti or practice jumping. If you choose to improve your balance while jumping, you should invest in some high-quality horse jump cups.

Try Out Different Horses

It is easy to become comfortable on your favorite horse. You become accustomed to his habits and disposition so you know how to handle him when he acts up. However, it is important to remember that just because you know how to handle one horse appropriately doesn’t mean you are a great rider. You should try out different horses so you can improve your skills. As a beginner, you will likely need a calm mount while experienced riders should graduate to more high-strung mounts that provide more of a challenge.

Practice Different Disciplines

Different riding disciplines require separate skills so if you want to improve as a rider, it is a good idea to practice multiple riding activities. If you are most comfortable jumping, you may want to try our dressage. If you’re a barrel racer, try pole bending to enhance your skills. You may even want to try an entirely new discipline and try riding Western-style instead of English.

You should always strive to improve your skills in any sport you practice. These three tips can help you improve your skills as a horseback rider.
